THE HEAVENLY GATE -

    Eπουράνιος Πύλη

The Most Holy Mother of God, The Theotokos, our Panagia, is central to Orthodoxy.  Her   significance to the Eastern Orthodox faith is witnessed by the over 500 names   attributed to Her.  Petitions to Panagia fill our church services and prayers.  In   every part of the World, countless Churches and Monasteries are built honoring   The Theotokos, who is the greatest advocate of men before God. It is to Her that we   flee after God Himself, beseeching Her intercessions in danger, illness, in times of   grief, and with thankfulness in times of joy.

We witness Her miraculous conception and birth (celebrated September 8th) to the aging Saints Ioachim and Anna followed by Her Entrance to the Temple (celebrated November 21st) at a very young age where only the priests were permitted to enter.  This Entrance of the Mother of God is the introduction of man’s salvation, which opened the Gates of Heaven. Her purity was accepted by God and Panagia lived in the Temple throughout Her childhood, nourished in both spirit and body by the Angels.  “The Virgin entered the Holy of Holies, so that God from the Holy Place would come through Her to save mankind”. (Saint Nektarios the Wonderworker, Metropolitan of Pentapolis 1904)

Panagia became the faithful handmaiden of the Lord showing Her perfect humility by obeying the Will of God spoken to Her through God’s messenger, the Archangel Gabriel who told Her a son would be born to Her, and His name would be Jesus, Who would be the salvation of the world (celebrated March 25th). The title Heavenly Gate  is given to Panagia because it was through her that our Lord passed from heaven to earth.

She is truly the mother of the Church and her abundant love overflows on us all.  She is The Heavenly Gate, Eπουράνιος Πύλη, the God-bearer, the path to Heaven, the path to our salvation.
