Description

This exquisite antique vellum, dating back to the 12th century, is a wonderful piece of history. The Latin text is from Psalm 72 and was likely to have been sung in a Benedictine monastery as part of the Liturgy of the Hours. Measuring 19 x 28 inches in size, this calf-skin vellum showcases the artistry and craftsmanship of its time. The large format would have allowed the choir to read this single document from a distance. Its simple black frame (25.5 x36 inches) reflects the solemn nature of the scripture.

Perfect for collectors and history enthusiasts alike, this antique vellum is not just a document; it is a tangible connection to the past, highlighting the significance of medieval manuscripts and the materials used in their creation.

This piece was part of the estate of a professional librarian who travelled extensively in Europe as part of her work. When the PBS television program Antiques Road Show visited St. Louis a few years ago, their appraiser indicated that such a work would sell for between $500 and $1,000 at auction. From the collection of Don Ronken.

Don't miss the opportunity to own this exceptional piece of 12th-century vellum. Can be hand delivered in the St. Louis area.
