Description
This Asian-style ink and wash painting is by Japanese born artist Jean Mason. The artwork uses traditional East Asian techniques involving a brush and ink (sumi-e) with light watercolor washes on paper, a style known as shan shui in Chinese, meaning "mountain-water". The painting features loquats (Eriobotrya japonica), a fruit native to China that is also known as the Japanese plum. In Chinese culture, the loquat is a highly auspicious fruit, often referred to poetically as "golden balls". It symbolizes abundance, wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. The red square seals, or hanko/inkan, are characteristic of East Asian art and typically denote the artist's name. The inscription "4/90" is likely a date reference (April 1990). The art is presented in a simple, thin gold-toned frame with a wide, off-white or cream-colored matting and is ready to hang.
Color: yellows and greens, frame is gold
Condition: gently used
