Description

Bonnie Rychlak, "New Users"
Yoga mat, metal, mirror, and cast wax
22 x 3 inches

Artist Bio: I am an artist, sometimes a curator, and a writer. As a practicing artist, I have presented my work in solo and numerous group exhibitions in the U.S. and Japan. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. I have received numerous grants and residencies. As a curator and museum consultant, I have organized numerous modern and contemporary art exhibitions, including those for ArtHelix in Bushwick, New York; LongHouse Reserve in East Hampton; the Bogart Salon in Bushwick, New York; and in Orange County, California. I am the former curator for and studio assistant to Isamu Noguchi, having curated numerous exhibitions for his museum and foundation.

Artist Statement: I have stretched a yoga mat over a circular stretcher for New Uses. This modern material references a ubiquitous new age activity as it incorporates elements of urban mechanicals. The drain motif signifies the action of evacuation, of siphoning off, while the mirror makes the viewer the subject in this activity, in a polarity of concepts.
