Description
In her new memoir, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductee and Chicago native Patti Smith discusses her upbringing in post-World War II America.
Author Bio: Patti Smith was born in 1946 in Chicago. Her father was a World War II veteran, and her mother was a waitress and former jazz singer. Smith moved around often until the age of nine, when she, her parents, and her two younger siblings settled in New Jersey. Growing up, Smith was interested in poetry and music, with some of her inspirations being Arthur Rimbaud and Bob Dylan. After dropping out of college, Smith moved to New York City with dreams of becoming an artist. There, she began to fuse her love for poetry with her love for rock music. Throughout her career, Smith’s use of poetry and political commentary in her music, along with her androgynous style, earned her a place in punk rock legend. Smith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007 and soon after began to focus on writing, publishing her first memoir, Just Kids, in 2010.
