About Daily Bread Founded in 1984, Daily Bread is the largest food pantry in the Greater Danbury area. For many years, we operated out of a small building on the campus of St James’ Church on West Street. Early in 2025, however, we opened a state-of-the-art super pantry where the old military museum used to be on Park Avenue. We are open all day for six days a week, so guests can visit the pantry on their schedule. Our super pantry incorporates best practices from around the country, and focuses on fresh produce and healthy proteins. We serve around 1,000 families per week and distribute upwards of 40,000 pounds of food. Daily Bread is run entirely by its 750+ active volunteers. You can find out lots more about us on our website, DailyBreadFoodPantry.com. How We Will Use Your Donation We will purchase and install an open, air curtain, refrigeration unit in our shopping area. This unit will allow us to display highly perishable produce such as lettuce, other salad greens and soft fruit in an attractive way, while at the same time holding these items in optimal condition. Our current glass-door merchandisers, while excellent for milk, eggs and other packaged foods, are not ideal for produce. Commercial-grade air-curtain refrigeration units are expensive, which is why we have hesitated to purchase one to date. With the very generous contribution from the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Danbury, we will be able to offer this very significant upgrade to our guests.
