Desert Hush, by Laura Cabanilla. Original oil study 5x5” on clayboard with comes with its own metal stand for display. This small study makes the enormous atmospheric sky feel even more expansive. The land is reduced to almost a dark line, while the muted peach, rose, gray-blue and lavender forms seem to drift across the sky. About the artist. Laura had begun painting early in her life and studied art at Brigham Young University. She became busy with her career as a military officer and an attorney, and mother to 4 children (triplets and another son 2 ½ years later) and had put painting somewhat aside. Laura is a board member with Utah Pet Partners and acting chair. Shortly before Covid, Laura took up painting again studying oil painting weekly with the artist David Price. Her paintings are inspired by Utah’s Desert and the American Southwest, featuring very large skies, simplified landforms, strong horizontal bands and striking color that evoke atmosphere more than literal local color.
