Description
Chester County, PA. 11x14". Located in Schuylkill Township and not far from the Tinker Dam Farm, is a farmhouse, whose initial section was built circa 1770. Elijah Funk Pennypacker was born here in 1804. His father Joseph, likely a descendant of the patriarch Hendrick Pannebecker, was also born on this farmstead, currently known as White Horse Farm. Joseph was presumably the farmer who built this stone barn circa 1810. Though it was his father's, Elijah made the barn famous, thanks, in part, to an underground tunnel that led from the farmhouse to the barn, a clever way to hide runaway slaves if bounty hunters arrived to search the house. This painting can be seen at the Pump House Center for the Arts located in Chillicothe, Oh. Call 740 772-1936 with questions.
