Description
Original Medium 5" Sgraffito Pottery Vase by Mary Ervin of Ervin Road Pottery.
Sgraffito is an Italian artistic or decorative technique of scratching through a coating on a hard surface to reveal parts of another underling coating which is in a contrasting color. It is produced on pottery by applying two successive layers of contrasting slip or glaze to an unfired ceramic body.
Mary Ervin, owner of Ervin Road Pottery, is a local potter who has always been interested in creative arts of many varieties. Her work is on display and available for sale locally at West Union Art Studios in Morganton, NC. Mary has always been drawn to art and has experimented in various mediums all of her life. When she discovered clay, a whole new world of artistic expression opened up for her. She focuses on functional pieces, mostly wheel-thrown with decorations such as sgraffito and glaze painting. Face jugs and piggy banks are especially fun for her but many of her pieces are made to be used in the home on a daily basis. This includes various bowl and cup designs, pitchers, vases, and plates. Her work is somewhat whimsical with elements of folk art and she is always experimenting with new designs and techniques, so her work is constantly evolving.
