About the Artist
Frances Greenberg displayed early signs of artistic accomplishment when, at the age of four, she created a mural of nudes in crayon on her bedroom wall. She was obliged to cover them with grass skirts. She continued her informal training by practicing drawing on the coasters at the bar in her father's restaurant. She received her first real recognition by getting caught doing caricatures of her seventh grade teachers. She considered becoming a doctor.
Frances Greenberg is a watercolor artist who works in an illustrative style reminiscent of book illustrations of an earlier era. Because of the popularity of her work, Ms. Greenberg has introduced a line of hand-colored prints. This allows the artist to create a print edition of each drawing. Each print is then painted with color variations resulting in an original piece. In 1982, she introduced a line of limited edition offset lithographs which are fine-quality reproductions of her most popular works. New reproductions are introduced each year.
Ms. Greenberg has shown in numerous galleries, but she prefers to market her work at major Arts and Crafts Fairs. This provides her the opportunity to meet the people who collected her work.
Ms. Greenberg includes in her academic credits The New York Institute of Technology, The New School for Social Research, and New York University. She has an MFA in painting from The George Washington University and has taught design, painting, drawing, and art history at The Maryland School of Art and Design and Prince George's Community College in Maryland.
In 1976, Ms. Greenberg moved to Johnson City, Tennessee, to find a less pressured environment in which to work. The result has been the development of a bright, refreshing style which is uniquely her own. It is a long way from the mural of nudes on the bedroom wall, a lot of time and work, but the joy is still in it and it shows.
