Description
Hear New York City’s longest-running ”Messiah,” and the 151st consecutive performance of Handel’s enduring and beloved masterpiece of classical choral music. The Oratorio Society of New York (OSNY.org), 200 singers strong, performs the work with orchestra and soloists. This piece is famed for the epic “Hallelujah Chorus” and many other sections of surpassing beauty. Composed in just 24 days in 1741 and originally associated with Easter, “Messiah” gradually became a staple of the Christmas season, celebrated not only for its spiritual message but also for its expressive depth and theatrical immediacy. Nearly 300 years after its creation, “Messiah” continues to move audiences not just as a seasonal tradition, but as a profound musical testament to hope, faith, and the transformative power of art. It is now one of the best-known and most frequently performed classical choral pieces in the world, and is an excellent introduction to classical music generally. Tickets are provided by Shakespeare board member and Oratorio Society singer Michael Sagalyn who will be happy to say hello after the show!
