MERRIMACK COUNTY, NH. 11X14 From his humble start John Milton Hay, born in 1838 in Salem, Indiana, became Lincoln's secretary and biographer – years before his son built this elegant barn in 1916. Hay served as Secretary of State under President Theodore Roosevelt and the assassinated McKinley.
