Artist Statement: Heidi Schlatter’s work spans across multiple mediums and often directly engages with the built
environment, examining how architecture reflects and reinforces power structures and economics.
This print, “Ore” comes from her installation at CAS in 2025 which incorporated pictures that pull
from the languages of both photography and sculpture.
Highlighting the romanticized role of photography in the representation and historicization of the American
western landscape, this work examines the legacy of resource extraction on the appropriation and
settlement of the continent, and how it is intertwined with American exceptionalism and capitalism.
