Jake Sanderson played at the University of North Dakota for 2 seasons, 2021-20 and 2021-22. He was named assistant captain during his sophomore (2021-22) year. The defenseman tallied 10 goals, 31 assists for 41 points, playing in 45 games. Sanderson was named to the All NCHC Second Team (2021-22), earned AHCA All America West First Team honors (2022), NCHC All-Academic Team (2022), NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete (2021, 2022) and All-NCHC Rookie Team (2020-21). Sanderson was selected in the 1st round, 5th overall, by the Ottawa Senators in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft. This made Sanderson the highest-drafted player in the NCHC history to date, and second highest in UND history to date. Following his sophomore year Sanderson signed with the Ottawa Senators (2022). He is 1 of 4 UND players who all played together during the 2020-21 season then signed with the Ottawa Senators after their time at UND (T. Kleven, S. Pinto and J. Bernard-Docker).
