About the author:
Dr. Kate Sampsell is an abstract artist living in Fayette, Maine. Her media are painting, printmaking, and photography. She was born and raised in Baltimore but arrived in Maine via Seattle and various places overseas. She has lived and worked overseas in Turkey, the UAE, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, France, and Germany. Kate has also traveled to Thailand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Denmark, Spain, Greece, Egypt, Oman, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia (as it was known then), Poland, Austria, Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, Italy, Switzerland, and a host of other places, where she made, viewed, and bought art.

Kate is primarily works in abstractions in all her media. She is also an artist with a disability. Because she has been robbed of fine motor control in her hands from a genetic condition, she started her art career in photography, using film and making her own prints. In the last five years, she has progressed to making abstract art relying in contrasting and complementing colors and a free hand to form abstract shapes that reveal themselves through pareidolia, the human tendency to find patterns and recognizable figures (especially faces) in seeming random places (clouds, for instance). Kate’s philosophy of art is grounded in the art history of modernism. Rather than seeing splashes of unrelated color that many people think a child could easily do, Kate relies on deep study of color theory and the practice of channeling emotion into art. The invention of the camera made purely representational art obsolete. True innovation and flashes of the sublime come to the artist through equal parts spontaneity and deep emotional awareness. Her favorite period in art history is German and Abstract Expressionism, which is most obvious in her linoleum prints.

In addition to being an artist, Kate Sampsell holds a Ph.D. with distinction in American intellectual history and visual culture from Georgetown University, a J.D. from the University of Baltimore, a Summa Cum Laude B.A. in Medieval European history from McDaniel College, and several certificates in photography and painting from Baltimore-area institutions, including Maryland Institute College of Art. She was a member of Gallery 110 in Seattle until moving to Maine in 2024. Her work has been exhibited widely in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. She lives with her husband Doug Willmann in Fayette, Maine. She is the author of Lewis Hine as Social Critic (Jackson: Univ. of Mississippi Press, 2009) and contributing author of An Account of an Elizabethan Family: Volume 55: The Willoughbys of Wollaton by Cassandra Willoughby, 1670–1735 (Cambridge, Cambridge Univ. Press, 2019).
