"Ephesus Heart" by Piers Secunda
2025
38cm x 31cm (Paper Size)
C-Print on Hahnmeuller paper, hand finished with Turkish Burned Layer Archaeology Ink.
Edition of 15
Piers Secunda, renowned artist known primarily for sculpture, has recently released a series of limited edition prints; "Ephesus Heart" is the first print of the series. The ink used for this print was produced from "Burned Layer" soil, removed from an archaeological dig for Piers's use, by the British Institute for Achaeology in Turkey. The "Burned Layer" soil marks the same archaeologoical strata and time frame as the destruction of Troy (1184 BCE). The print portrays a historically overlooked love heart, which is set into the mosaic pavement of Curetes Street, in the 10th Century Roman city of Ephesus, in Western Turkey.
Piers Secunda was born in London, England, in 1976 and studied at Chelsea College of Art in London, graduating in 1998. He is a descendent of the Scottish McRoberts family, who arrived to New Orleans in the 1800’s. For 25 years Piers’ art work has examined the destruction of culture, with in-depth, multiyear projects focusing on the Taliban, ISIS and most recently, Ukraine.
Piers’ work has been exhibited internationally and is held in the collections of museums including The British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, 9/11 Memorial Museum, Iraq National Museum, Mosul Museum, Imperial War Museum, and is on permanent display in Oxford University’s Ashmolean Museum.
