Lizzie Wright, "Hurleyville Cemetary Detail" Oil and crayon on linen 9.5 x 12.5 inches Artist Bio: Lizzie Wright is a sculptor and painter who lives and works in NYC and the Catskills. She received an MFA in Sculpture from Yale University and has exhibited at a variety of spaces including Catskill Art Space, Mindy Solomon, Halsey McKay, Marinaro, Rawson Projects, Essex Flowers and Nicelle Beauchene. Her work has been reviewed by various publications including The Brooklyn Rail and The New Yorker. Artist Statement: To make my grave-based oil paintings, sized canvas is draped over headstones and the edges of the fabric are rubbed with oil or wax medium. Back in the studio, a layer of paint is applied and wiped off, revealing the image, which appears a bit like developing a film photograph. These paintings probe historical remnants as they also explore human connections, in this case by place of burial.
