Description

Mary Lucier, "Studio Window"
17 x 22 inches
Photograph

Artist's Statement: The photograph "Studio Window" is an outtake from the video installation, Leaving Earth, shown at the Catskill Art Space over the summer of 2024. It presents an image of the artist's late husband's painting studio in Cochecton, NY after his death in 2015 and aligns with his interest in the natural world as seen from the indoors out, with an eye educated in both abstraction and realism. The original image was shot with a video camera and edited in such a way as to suggest a digital approximation of an actual painting.

Artist Bio: Mary Lucier was born in Ohio and graduated from Brandeis University where she studied sculpture and received a BA with honors in English and American Literature. In 1974 she moved to New York, where she has lived and worked since. With her husband, the painter Robert Berlind, she has maintained studios both in New York City and upstate New York. Lucier, whose work is widely exhibited, has made work in many mediums including sculpture, photography, and performance, but has concentrated primarily on video and installation since the 1970's, showing numerous mixed media pieces in museums worldwide. She is represented by Cristin Tierney Gallery in New York.
