"In a reading group this winter, studying Jasper Stahl's two volumes, 'The History of Old Broad Bay and Waldoboro', I could not get out of my mind his description of the worst year ever (climatically). I could not stop imagining being new or alone in Waldoboro in 1816 when it struck and being filled with dread; being powerless in its face, not knowing what it meant (caused by a massive volcanic eruption in Indonesia at Mt. Tambora) and this is how I imagine that year in early Waldoboro."
