Description

These authentic wooden "spears" were made by Fongoli chimpanzees. Winner has first choice of one of four different tools. These tools are used to rouse galago primates ("bushbabies") from the tree or branch cavities where they (try and) sleep! The Fongoli community of chimps is the only one that has been observed so far to systematically hunt with tools. We have recorded over 600 hunting bouts so far! Also, females hunt with tools at higher rates than males do, which is the opposite of what is seen at other chimpanzee study sites. Usually, adult males are the predominant hunters. Winner of this tool will also receive a DVD of the BBC documentary, 'Life Story', which was filmed at Fongoli and shows the hunting behavior.
