St. Andrews Church
14 3/8" x 15 1/2"

St. Andrews Parish was formally established and held its first services atop Church Hill in 1731. This small building was soon outgrown and around 1809 or 1810. The old building was dismantled and the congregation moved to its current location on Church Street, in the Four Corners neighborhood of Hanover.

The history of St. Andrews church is the history of Hanover. These early families, many made famous at shipyards along the banks of the North River, were the founders of this church. Records of marriages, baptisms and burials include the names of Sylvester, Stockbridge, Turner, Foster, Palmer, Bailey, Eells, Barstow, Stetson and Magoun. Throughout the decades, these families contribured their time, talent and treasure to expand and enhance the structure.

On June 1, 1880, lightening in the form of a fire ball descended on the Church burning the spire and the tower to the bell deck. Heroic exertions of parishioners and neighbors aided by a drenching rain preserved the edifice from destruction. The rebuilt exterior and enlarged edifice were completed by September 30. A new bell was in postion and the organ moved from the east end gallery to the floor.

A little more than a century later in 1986, on Christmas night another devastating fire caused the roof to fall in leaving only the walls standing. The building was rebuilt in its original style as it remains today, a testament to the St. Andrews congregations past and present.
