St. John artist Viki Brown draws inspiration from the natural beauty of the island, the beach, and the realm of dreams, noting a particular fascination for "shamanic dreams." Her unique painting style involves applying several layers of oils and then scraping some away to reveal the colors beneath, a technique she employs to achieve "three or four different dimensions" in her work. Brown's interest in art began during her childhood in Orlando, Florida, where she was captivated by her mother's work painting over her photographer father's black and white images. Her Chinese grandfather further nurtured this talent by providing watercolor lessons in exchange for her promise to learn Chinese. Born in the Chicago area, Brown spent her formative years in Orlando. After graduating high school, she worked as a tour guide at Disney World, which provided tuition for her to earn a bachelor's degree in fine art from the University of Central Florida. She later honed her skills by studying at the Art Students League in New York.
