Description

Frederick County, MD. 11x14. Built in 1798 by the woman whose family probably fled their slave plantation on Saint-Domingue, present-day Haiti, before or after the French Revolution, a rebellion which gained momentum with the storming of the Bastille in 1789. Another factor that might have led the family to flee to Maryland was the Haitian Revolution that began in 1791. The barn also features a Civil War story, which took place on this farmstead. This painting can be seen at the Oregon-Jerusalem Historical Society, located near Toledo, Oh. Call with questions 419 902-5149
