Description

Xavier Ponce (Quito Ecuador, 1969), discovered his passion for photography in the mid-90s when he acquired his first SLR camera and joined a film developing workshop. Setting up a darkroom in his bathroom, he quickly became enamored with the art of developing photos and realized he had found an artistic calling. With over three decades of experience, Xavier has refined his skills and amassed an important collection of images. His portfolio primarily showcases deep blacks, high-contrast monochromatic shots, with a focus on street, architecture, and fine art photography. While he occasionally explores portraiture and color photography, his heart lies in the timeless elegance of black and white imagery. At the age of 50, Xavier made the bold decision to embrace color-blindness by choice, paying tribute to his roots in analog photography and devote significant time and eRort to this purpose; this allowed him to deepen his passion and cultivate a unique and focused style. Through his presence in photography-related social media platforms and submissions to well-known awards and exhibitions, he garnered unexpected attention and acclaim for his distinctive work and style - which still surprises him and gives him a particular sense of gratitude. Xavier is predominantly self-taught but has also spent time with renowned photographers such as Phil Penman, Sandro Miller, and Mark Edward Harris which he now considers friends. His work has been recently celebrated in prestigious exhibitions and competitions such as LensCulture, Refocus Awards, MonoAwards and LFI Gallery, and his prints now adorn the walls of the homes of many friends and customers and a few galleries around the world. His work has been featured in Lens Magazine, Digital Photographer, Art Market Magazine, X Milk Magazine (HK) and more. Xaviers work was a finalist in the Street Photography category in the renowned Sony World Photography Awards in 2024, exhibited in Somerset House in London. Xavier is a member of Team Ecuador of the World Photographic cup 2025 A dedicated user of the Leica system, Xavier values the intricate simplicity of their cameras and lenses, which have become his preferred tools for capturing his artistic vision.
