"Hands-on learning and visual supports benefit autistic students by enhancing understanding, promoting independence, reducing anxiety, and facilitating communication and social skills by providing concrete experiences and clear, structured information. Visual thinking and learning go hand in hand for many individuals with autism. By utilizing visual tools, such as picture cards, video models, and manipulatives, autistic individuals can better comprehend information, express themselves effectively, and grasp abstract concepts. Benefits of Hands-On Learning: Concrete Experiences: Autistic individuals often benefit from concrete experiences over abstract concepts, and hands-on learning provides this by allowing them to actively engage with materials and tasks. Enhanced Understanding:By manipulating objects and participating in activities, autistic students can grasp concepts and learn skills more effectively. Improved Motor Skills:Hands-on activities can help develop fine and gross motor skills, which are important for everyday tasks and learning. Increased Engagement:The active nature of hands-on learning can increase engagement and motivation, making learning more enjoyable and effective. Reduced Anxiety:Hands-on activities can provide a sense of control and predictability, which can help reduce anxiety and promote a more positive learning environment. Benefits of Visual Supports: Improved Communication:Visual supports, such as picture schedules, social stories, and visual timers, can help autistic students understand instructions, routines, and social cues. Enhanced Understanding:Visuals can make information more accessible and easier to understand, especially for students who struggle with language or abstract concepts. Reduced Anxiety:Visual supports can provide structure and predictability, which can help reduce anxiety and promote a more positive learning environment. Increased Independence:Visual supports can help autistic students become more independent by providing them with clear expectations and routines. Improved Social Skills:Visuals can help autistic students understand social situations and expectations, which can improve their social interactions. Enhanced Learning:Visual aids like graphic organizers, diagrams, and charts can help autistic students organize information, understand relationships between concepts, and improve comprehension. Promote Self-Advocacy:Visual supports can empower autistic students to communicate their needs and preferences, fostering self-advocacy and independence. The other great benefit is that each day is detailed and has a very extensive lesson plan. This way any sub or para can walk in and teach the lesson."
