The Power of Core Words, Staples Elementary, Mrs. Victoria Heath
Our students in the Self-Contained (LID) classrooms, don’t always have the ability to communicate with their peers the way other students who are able to communicate verbally. We would like to allocate the grant money to outside coreboards that have visuals that our students can use to help communicate their basic wants and needs with specific playground vocabulary. A coreboard is a low-tech communication tool that helps people communicate through symbols and words. The symbols and words have our most frequently used words in our language, such as pronouns, verbs, prepositions, and descriptive terms. These coreboards are made out of more sturdy material that can withstand the different weather elements. As well as, icons that will be enlarged to give our students with all disabilities the ability to navigate the board with ease. Our goal as speech therapist, is to give all our students the ability to communicate in any setting they are in.
